History of San Francisco
Today San Francisco is a proud city with its beautiful Golden Gate Bridge, many cultural attractions, vibrant entertainment options and wonderful climate. Its 750,000 citizens welcome millions of tourists each year to enjoy the waves at Fisherman's Wharf and the charms of the city's rolling hills. However, San Francisco was not always a lively city. The area was originally inhabited by a small group of Ohlone Indians. The Spanish arrived to colonize the area in 1769. However, the original settlers would soon desert the small town. It was not until 1849 that San Francisco's population began to really swell. The discovery of gold summoned a flood of hopeful prospectors. While many would have their hopes disappointed, the city provided a wealth of less uncertain opportunities and soon small industries, mercantile establishments and shipping to the Orient were contributing to a prosperous and growing city. The city even inspired visiting authors like Jack London and Mark Twain. By 1870, San Francisco had become the 10th largest city in the United States. However, in 1906, it all fell to pieces, literally. The massive earthquake that hit the city resulted in immense and widespread destruction. San Francisco's citizens were not to be so easily defeated, however, and they slowly worked to rebuild the city, working to make it better than it had been before the earthquake. The culmination of San Francisco's rebirth would occur with the creation of the Golden Gate Bridge. It was one of the longest suspension bridges in the world with the highest towers ever built. Today the bridge remains an instantly recognizable landmark for many and a beacon of hope and success for San Francisco. From its bustling trolley cars to the retired but still looming Alcatraz prison, San Francisco offers visitors and residents alike a fascinating history and a dynamic present that make the city a highly enjoyable place.
