Living in Philadelphia

If you are an adult student living in the Philadelphia region, you are probably already familiar with much of what the city has to offer. However, for those who may not have spent much time in the city and are wondering what to do for fun and relaxation between classes and work and whatever other responsibilities you may be juggling, here's a small sample:

The Philadelphia Museum of Art
Run up the steps that Sylvester Stallone's Rocky immortalized and feel like a champ. Once you catch your breath, experience a stunning display of classic and modern art with a constantly rotating series of special exhibits from legends like Salvador Dali.

Reading Terminal Market
If you've never been to a farmer's market, you definitely should check out this vibrant utopia. First opened in 1892, you'll find that this indoor shopping extravaganza offers mountains of diverse cuisine and interesting knickknacks while the crowded aisles bustle with energy.

Avenue of the Arts
Enjoy a mini-Broadway: the beautiful glass and wood of the Kimmel Center houses multiple theater rooms where one of the best orchestras in the world give breathtaking performances of musical art. Flanking this building are a plethora of theaters that put on plays and musicals as diverse as Les Miserables and Spamalot.

South Street
Visit one of the most exciting stretches of outdoor dining, shopping and adventure in the entire city. Step into unique boutiques or enjoy the frequent street performances.

Franklin Institute
You don't have to be in Philadelphia long to discover the huge imprint that founding father Benjamin Franklin left on the city. One of the most fun and educational places to do so is the hands-on Franklin Institute with its variety of exhibits and IMAX theater. It's a great location for a day of family fun that's also educational - Where else can you climb around inside a giant heart?

Penn's Landing
Great during the summer or for maritime attractions, Penn's Landing offers riverside access in addition to a variety of world-class restaurants and bumping nightlife year round.

Philadelphia Zoo
In keeping with our list of firsts in the [history section: http://educationforadults.com/philadelphia/history.html ], the Philadelphia Zoo was America's first and continues to offer an impressive number of attractions in addition to their colorful collection of wildlife. Check out their website for different seasonal attractions ( http://www.phillyzoo.org/ ).

Italian Market
Everyone remembers Rocky sprinting up the museum steps, but he also jogged through the largest, oldest working outdoor market in the United States. Visitors can partake of the wares of street vendors packed between Italian delicatessens as they experience the best in Old World cuisine.

Philadelphia Fanatics
Anyone who has spent any time in Philadelphia (and most people who haven't as well) will attest to how much Philadelphians love their sports teams. From the Eagles to the Phillies to the Flyers to the 76ers, and even the Wings (Lacrosse), Kixx (soccer) and Phantoms (minor league hockey), Philadelphia sports generate a significant part of the city's vitality. You should definitely check out at least a few of the games to get the full Philly experience. Plus, the Phillies' own Phillie Phanatic is an iconic mascot created by the legendary Jim Henson.

Public Transportation
As you'll obviously need to travel around the city in order to visit all these destination's, you can get more information on the city's many forms of public transportation from SEPTA - the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority (http://www.septa.org).
